Since we’re still on the subject of cabooses, last week’s “WW #146” is another broadside view of caboose #17. For a view of #17 in work train service, see here.

Last week’s “WW #145” is a 3/4 view of another S&NY 4-wheel caboose, #17. The railroad rostered 4 cabooses at the time of abandonment: #’s 14, 15, 16, and 17. #15 was the only 8-wheel caboose, and went to the Arcade & Attica Railroad in southern New York, where it still exists on static display. Here is a vertigo-inducing look at the restored interior. #17, alas, was either sold for use as a chicken coop or burned to recover the metal parts for the war effort.

Last week’s “WW #134” is an excellent side view of S&NY 4-wheel caboose #17. I am unsure of the history of this piece of equipment. The side-sill and underframe are different than a PRR ND cabin car, and #17 may be of Reading or Lehigh Valley heritage. Kaseman’s book is silent on regarding the fate of #17 after abandonment, other than that the cabooses were listed for sale at $50 each, price later reduced…

Last week’s WW #42 is another interesting shot by Robert Richardson from the Denver Public Library, Western History Collection. Also dated 13 September 1939, in this view locomotive #117 is in charge of a work train that includes ditcher #6 and caboose #17. Trainmaster J.J. Coleman stands on the rear platform of the caboose, along with another unidentified S&NY employee.
A new-looking bridge is to the right, possibly built by CCC men from Laquin or Masten. The exact location is not specified, other than “probably Bradford County, PA.”
