The chains and pole hanging from the tender are hints that when confronted with a pickup of a car on a facing point switch the car was chained and dragged close to the switch. Then the loco would move past the car and the pole would be used to urge it onto the same track the loco was on. The pole and chains were returned to the tender, the coupling was made and the train proceeded on.
This is a move that is difficult to replicate in HO scale.
