Steam Power Re-lettering

Finally getting to a long-overdue re-lettering of a couple of Bachmann engines for the S&NY. The 2-6-0’s were factory-lettered for NYC, and the 4-6-0 is an undec. All three are “foobies” for the real S&NY and I had plans to re-detail the 2-6-0’s to more closely resemble the real S&NY #117, but that ain’t happening for the foreseeable future. I masked the tenders and cab sides and hit them with some rattle-can gloss black, so the decals had a nice surface. Once weathered, they should look pretty good once back in service.

Thank God for custom decals, though. After piecing together the engine numbers, there is absolutely no way I’d be spelling out “Susquehanna & New York” letter-by-letter 6 times on 3 different tenders…

  1. Looking good!
Where did you get the decals?
Are they “process yellow” or a custom color? If custom, is it a solid color or can you see halftone dots in an extreme close up?

Bill, Rail Graphics made them for me a bunch of years ago, before he retired from the business. The color is/was a standard yellow he offered in his catalog. I think it’s an ink of some sort, no half-tone dots that I can discern.

      • Thanks! A couple years ago I got some custom ‘De Luxe gold’decals for my railroad. The first attempt had a noticeable halftone pattern in the close up photos I like to take. The second try was a solid yellow color. It was printed over white because that yellow was pretty transparent. Unfortunately the registration wasn’t exact so there were white edges on many of the letters.

Everytime I see yellow-gold decals I ask. I’d even hoped to find someone still sceen printing decals, but no luck. Thanks for the information on yours. They look good on the locos and tenders.
